In compiling the 1st- to 11th-place patterns from this year’s Bassmaster Classic on the Red River, we made sure to ask which pool(s) the guys fished in. Why? To inform the database, and thus to better-inform BassGold members.

In the past, according to BassGold pattern info, most 1st through 5th finishers have fished in

Pool 5: 50% of winners and 48% of those who finished 2nd-5th. About 38% of winners finished Pool 4, and 36% of 2nd-5th fished there.

At this year’s Classic, the Top 11 were split 50% and 63% in pools 5 and 4 respectively: The totals don’t add to 100% because two competitors – Chris Lane (1st) and Kevin VanDam (11th) – fished both pools.

Water temperature (mostly) and water clarity figured high in the anglers’ choices to fish Pool 4. Seemed like the slightly warmer water temperature made up for less fishing time in Pool 4 due to locking.
